Because of this inheritance pattern, Y-STR testing can help confirm a biological connection through the male line when the alleged father is unavailable for direct testing.

This test is often used to compare a child with a paternal relative such as a grandfather, uncle, half-brother, or other male family member within the same direct paternal line. If a biological paternal relationship exists, the Y-chromosome profiles will match. If the individuals are not related through the paternal line, the profiles will show differences.
